East Sussex: To the Rise Bakery

I discovered To the Rise Bakery via Instagram. Their feed is full of freshly baked sourdough and delicious pastries and I loved their story.  Like all producers on nearHome, it is the passion of a family – in this case, sisters Josphine, Morgan and Lauren. Therefore, what better way to start our visit to East Sussex than breakfast at their shop and cafe on Terminus Road, Eastbourne.  Although we were early, the shop was already buzzing with customers who had discovered this wonderful bakery for themselves.

The staff were really friendly, very welcoming and knowledgeable about their products. We sat outside at one of the pavement tables enjoying great coffee and delicious iced cinnamon buns and vegan cinnamon buns as we watched the world go by. We also bought a loaf of their seeded sourdough bread and a rye loaf to try at home.

I usually find rye bread can be rather dry and heavy, but this one was anything but. Wow!! Wow!! Wow!! Moist, light and utterly flavoursome. I wish I had bought more!! The seeded sourdough was equally tasty and full of a variety of seeds.

If you are in Eastbourne, I’d highly recommend To The Rise.

After breakfast, we strolled down to the beach and enjoyed the view of Eastbourne Pier which was opened in 1870 and was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time.
